A modern take on the old phrase is that there is more than one way to skin a desktop. You can enjoy four different desktops on your desktop, even when it’s a mobile device! You can also switch between these desktops with ease, all from your USB flash drive, without installing anything. There are various applications like Mojopac and Virtual Desktop Manager, which allow you to create multiple desktops, but WindowsPager is easier on your computer as it can easily be carried in a USB flash drive and doesn’t require installation or configuration of Administrator rights to get started.
WindowsPager is a desktop switcher application for Windows, which helps you manage multiple screens with ease. It’s freeware; you only require the WindowsPager exe file and a Windows powered system. It works fine with both XP and Vista. Unlike some other virtual desktop applications, desktop switching is simpler and faster with WindowsPager. WindowsPager is an open source program developed by Jochen Baier and it can be downloaded from Sourceforge.net.
Extract the zip file to your USB flash drive. It will create a local directory in the drive. Open the folder and run the WindowsPager exe file.
When you run the WindowsPager exe file, it will split your desktop into four desktops. This will create four square shaped window thumbnails next to the system tray on your taskbar. Click on the thumbnails to swap between the virtual desktops. Now you can use virtual desktops to access different applications. You can also right click on the existing windows and shift them to different desktops. You can also use the desktop shortcut CTRL + drag to move the windows between the virtual desktops. WindowsPager supports a lot of other keyboard shortcuts too.
The tiny thumbnails also display the content on that particular desktop in the form of small icons. You can also keep a window always on the top by right clicking the window and selecting the windows option menu. You can also select a particular window to be always in visible mode, irrespective of the active desktop. You also get a flashing desktop alert for an IM message or other updates. The desktop you are currently using will be highlighted too.
Unfortunately, you can’t change the desktop wallpapers and other settings on your desktops. However, you do get the freedom to split the desktop using your pen drive. The four desktops integrate completely with your original desktop when you close the application.
